Jackson crawled through smoke and wreckage, trying to find someone alive. He scrambled over Grocit bodies torn to ribbons by the Krakzid lasers. Every time he came close to standing up, another concussion drove him to the ground.

He blinked smoke out of his eyes and strained to see where he was. He had to get the surviving attackers to the cavern, but he couldn’t see any part of the dome from here, much less which direction to take to the cavern.

He pushed himself a little farther forward, and his hands touched grass. They slid off the smooth black pavement of the Krakzid base to cool soil. Did he leave the bombardment behind him, or did he only hope that?

He glanced over his shoulder. Just then, a breath of wind blew the smoke aside and he saw the base stretched out in all its destruction. He was between the base and the cavern.

The sight lifted his spirits, but only slightly. He still needed to find anyone to rally to retreat to the cavern. Was he the only person left alive in this war zone?

A group of Krakzid fighter craft made another pass over his head. They didn’t shoot, but Jackson’s reflexes made him dive out of the way anyway. He hugged his arms over his head and flopped face down on the ground.

The Krakzid rotated around and around the base, hunting anything left alive. They circled to the far side. That gave him just a few seconds to get up and sneak a few more feet toward the dome.

He got onto his hands and knees, but when he inched forward, he came to another dead Grocit. He didn’t like climbing over the body, so he scooted around it.

He’d made it to the other side when the Krakzid came howling back. Jackson dove for cover behind the enormous corpse and ended up flattening himself right next to Roy.

Roy sprawled on his side behind the dead Grocit. Blood covered half his face and he had his eyes closed. Jackson hauled himself over to his friend and shook Roy’s shoulder. “Roy! Can you hear me?”

Roy jolted. “Huh?”

“Roy! It’s me! It’s Captain Keogh. Can you open your eyes?”

Roy’s eyes shot open and he bolted straight upright. “Benedict!”

“Settle down, man,” Jackson breathed. “The Krakzid are everywhere. We have to fall back to the cavern.”

Roy craned his head around and frowned at him trying to understand. Then he glanced toward the cavern. Roy might be injured, but he knew exactly where he was.

“Get as many Grocit, Gishki, Kanz, and Urvals as you can find and get them moving toward the cavern,” Jackson told him. “Get them to safety.”

“Benedict!” Roy bellowed. “Benedict—where are you?”

Jackson grabbed him and tried to pull him down. “Quiet! I gave you an order.”

Roy shouldered Jackson away and lurched to his feet, still yelling his head off. “Benedict, where are you?” He staggered away into the smoke.

Jackson jumped up before he could stop himself, but Roy was already storming off yelling for Benedict. Jackson looked back toward the cavern.
